江戸時代は海外との交易は少なく閉鎖的だったと言われていましたが、鎖国、という言葉から受けるイメージほど、鎖国をしてはいなかったのです。鎖国の語源は、オランダ商館のドイツ人医師、ケンペルが、日本誌をあらわしたさい、その一部を通訳が、鎖国論として翻訳したことにあります。オランダ商館、すなわちオランダ東インド会社という商社の日本支店と貿易しているだけで、国交すらないわけですから、ヨーロッパ人から見れば、国をとざしている、となるのは当然です。しかし、鎖国体制かの日本は、過去最高に外国との付き合いがよかったのです。当時、江戸幕府は、4つの口と、いわれる窓口をもっていました。
